Workshop on “ Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights: Realities among Brothel bases Sex Workers

RHSTEP Organized a day long Workshop on “ Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights: Realities among Brothel bases Sex Workers” at Hotel Raffles inn., Goal chamot, Faridpur on 30 June 2014.

There were 82 Participants among them 66 sex worker, peer educator, another associate organization's (NGO) workers and Additional Superintend of police, journalist were present in that workshop.

Objective of the Workshop:

•  To identify the Sexual and Reproductive Health problem of sex worker.

•  To know what kind of problem the sex worker are facing to get the health service.

•  To identify the problem and prevention measures of Sexual & Reproductive Health and determine the feasible step from RHSTEP.

Mr Masudul Haque , Consultant of RHSTEP offered the welcome speech in the workshop. Dr Enamul Hoque, Senior consultant (eye), Faridpur Medical College Hospital was present as Chief Guest. As a special guest Mr. Bijoy Bosak , Additional Superintend of police, Faridpur also present in the workshop. in his speech he advised the participant in workshop to take good quality health service, he also said if a base of a house is weak then house will be weak consequently if a mother would not be healthy then it is not possible to give birth a healthy child for her. He also advised to maintain the personal hygiene during adolescent period. He also mentioned that now it is very easy to get MR Service by medicine. RHSTEP providing many kinds of Reproductive health services with low cost. He also requested to use condom to the sex workers who were came from the sex community. At last he finished his speech with thanks from Faridpur district police.

Shila Rani Das , Associate Professor (Gyn & Obs) Faridpur Medical College Hospital, Faridpur and Technical Advisor of RHSTEP informed the gathers that in Faridpur there is a Government Hospital, One Sadar Hospital and mother welfare organization for health services. Besides, these some Nongovernmental organizations like RHSTEP and Marie Stopes are providing the reproductive health services. She also mentioned that MR is safe to be done in between 8 to 10 weeks of gestation. She requested to do MR from skilled persons or organization but not the unskilled one. At last she gave thanks to all and expects the betterment of the program.

Dr. Morol Yakub Ali, Deputy Director, District family planning, Faridpur , Mr. Partho sharothi sarker, Manager, CHCP and Mrs Mamtaj Begam , Lecturar , Community Paramedical Institute, faridpur were present in the workshop and gave their speech.

Sex worker have presented their problems to get the service regarding sexual and Reproductive health and exposed of torture they face in their daily life as follows.

•  Sex worker are affected by many diseases like syphilis, gonorrhea, cervical cancer and fallopian tube cancer, White discharge, lower abdomen pain, burning sensation during micturation, Cold, Fever, headache, jaundice, fell pain in vagina and itching in their sex organ. Irregular menstruation for these diseases Sex worker could not do sexual intercourse.

•  Police, Land lord, Babu (Local language), terrorist, Municipality charge high rate for their work and land lord do not want to give proper service, but taking the house rent even they do not have clients.

•  Sex clients want to do intercourse without condom, even do intercourse during pregnancy period and some time Customers want to pay fewer amount than the contract.

•  Authority/municipality does not clean drain daily that is why they have to face dirty environment. Sex worker do not have enough toilet and disposal system in the brothel.

•  Sometimes doctor expects more money for their treatment. In addition, doctor does not want to give honor/value. Overall the sex worker didn't get the moral support from the people.

•  Sex worker have to go far from their area to take the health service because people often use slung to them. Some people sell drugs in their premises.
