On 18 June 2026, RHSTEP’s Aparajeyo Tarunno (UYP) Project organized a special awareness program at its Barishal Center under the theme, “Leaving No One Behind: Ensuring the Health Rights of Women and Men with Disabilities is Our Commitment.”
The program brought together youth, young persons with disabilities, and community stakeholders to raise awareness about disability-inclusive healthcare and the importance of ensuring equal access to health and reproductive health services for all.
The event began with a welcome address by Youth Officer Joy Hari Biswas, who emphasized that disability should never be viewed as a limitation to a young person's potential. He highlighted the need for greater social awareness, inclusive attitudes, and coordinated efforts to ensure that young people with disabilities can fully exercise their health and reproductive health rights.
The main session was facilitated by Momena Shifa Rumki, a renowned public speaker, trainer, and respected member of Sohachari. Through an engaging and participatory presentation, she discussed different types of disabilities, the major challenges faced by young persons with disabilities in accessing healthcare services, and practical measures needed to address those barriers.
A special group activity session was conducted with participants, providing an opportunity for young people with disabilities to share their personal experiences, challenges, and aspirations. The session encouraged open dialogue and highlighted both the obstacles they face and the opportunities that can be created through inclusive policies and community support.
The program was attended by Hosne Ara, Field Officer of the Upazila Social Services Office, as a special guest. During an interactive discussion with participants, she explained existing government services, disability allowances, and legal rights available to persons with disabilities. She also openly acknowledged some of the challenges encountered at the field level and assured participants that the Department of Social Services would continue prioritizing efforts to ensure that young persons with disabilities receive all government benefits and support services.
Pradip Kumar Biswas, Accounts and Admin Officer of RHSTEP Medical Division, also addressed the gathering and discussed accessible pathways for obtaining healthcare services and support through RHSTEP initiatives.
In her closing remarks, Salma Khanom, Project Officer of RHSTEP Aparajeyo Tarunno Barishal Center, stressed that sustainable development cannot be achieved without the inclusion of persons with disabilities. She noted that empowering young people with disabilities and ensuring their equal access to healthcare are essential steps toward building an inclusive and equitable society.
The program concluded with a renewed commitment from participants, organizers, and stakeholders to promote disability-inclusive healthcare, strengthen awareness of health rights, and work collectively toward a future where no one is left behind.
